Office of the Ombudsman for Children

The role of the Ombudsman for Children is to influence at the general level of society so that the rights of the child are taken into account, for exmple in legislation. The Ombudsman for Children does not have the power to deal with individual children or families and the Ombudsman cannot make statements about individual cases. In addition, the Ombudsman for Children cannot change the decisions of other authorities or deal with complaints about them. The duties of the Ombudsman for Children are regulated by the Act on the Ombudsman for Children (1221/2004).

The requests to Ombudsman for Children should be addressed to the Administrative Assistant Rautio, not to the agency address.

The role of the Ombudsman for Children is to promote the best interests and rights of the child (Article 2 of the Ombudsman for Children Act). In her role, the Ombudsman for Children receives many invitations to various occasions. We ask all invitating parties to consider how the Ombudsman for Children’s participation in the event promotes the rights of the child and to send a brief justification attached to the invitation. The justification will be used to collect data for the annual statistics and the evaluation of the role of the Ombudsman for Children.

The office of the Ombudsman for Children has a permanent staff of six people: the Ombudsman, a lawyer, a senior researcher, a senior officers, a communications designer and an administrative assistant. The Ombudsman does not handle individual cases. Read more about Ombudsman´s duties.
